Casa of Denenchofu Casa of Denenchofu

Located on a hill in Denenchofu, Tokyo, this project is a residential development that aims to coexist with nature despite its urban setting.

The building features exposed concrete formed using cedar board formwork as its primary material; the insertion of horizontally continuous slotted glass adds a sense of lightness and delicacy to the substantial texture of the materials. Furthermore, the roof, which is set high above the structure, gives the entire building a sense of floating, creating a sense of unity with the surrounding sky and trees.

The site features lush landscaping, creating a composition where architecture and nature blend seamlessly, evolving in appearance over time.
By incorporating two courtyards that extend from the basement level to the second floor, light, breeze, and greenery are drawn into the building, providing a spatial experience where the natural environment flows continuously across each floor. Large openings and terraces blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a quiet and open retreat—even in the heart of the city.

As the sun sets, indirect lighting, water features, and the flickering of flames accentuate the shadows cast by the materials, causing the building’s appearance to shift with the passing of time.
Set within the established residential neighborhood of Denenchofu, this project proposes a new approach to urban living where nature, architecture, and light harmonize peacefully.
